PROJECT SCOPE

An extension of the book was also requested, an application/ebook variation of the final book. This was represented through an animated video showing how users would interact with the app.

The aim of this project was to create a coffee–table book about the American photographer Nan Goldin. A final layout as well as cover were designed reflecting the artist and her values as an artist.

PROCESS

The process for creating this book was quite difficult and long. Interpreting her art and researching her works was an important part of this project to capture the essence of the artist throughout the project.

Many challenges arose such as representing all the aspects of Goldin’s life throughout, while keeping a cohesive look. This was overcome by separating the book into two sections, high and low. Featuring her life in two different lights allowed for a better understanding of her experiences and how the artwork follows her personal journey.

Another difficulty that followed this was finding typefaces that matched the photography and mood as well as something clean to contrast the art’s boldness. I was able to solve this however by using a custom typeface generated for this project, alluding to the roughness and challenges Nan’s life had. To contrast this, a more minimal font was used, but one that still has some personality as to fit in.

Overall the process of creating this book was enjoyable. Learning about the artist’s world and recreating that environment was a fun challenge.

OUTCOME

It features Nan’s most famous works while visually telling her story along with it.

The final outcome of this project was an oversized book, with intense photography featured especially on the cover.

EBOOK–APP

It was challenging to capture the book in another way but having the chance to add elements like music and videos allowed for more interactivity and depth to the mood. An introduction allows viewers to get immersed into the book, and the colours of each section lets us dive into the highs and lows.

After creating the book, I began translating it to an electronic version. This was represented through an animated video showing how users would interact with the book.
