PROJECT SCOPE

Researching the music and capturing its essence was required.Along with the poster, a limited-edition, single-sleeve vinyl was requested.

The aim of this project was to create a poster showcasing the album Forbidden Planet by Bebe and Louis Barron.

PROCESS

The process for creating this poster was long but quite creative and intuitive. Creating while listening to the album allowed for some interesting concepts to come to mind, notably the one seen in the final poster. The abstract form of a sphere alludes to the possibility of a planet, without any literal portrayal. This was done to connect to the album as it has many personalities and layers to it, space like and abstract sounds.

After many sketches and texture exploration, a final mark-making to fill the shape was chosen. It entices the viewer while reflecting the lay- ers of sound within the music and contrast of short bleeps versus longer sounds. The composition is dynamic yet creates tension, which is common through the typographic treatment as well. Slightly misaligned angles and asymmetrically places type allowed it to feel apart of the image, while still being present and legible.

OUTCOME

The album title continues onto the backside, enticing the listener to turn it around, then open it up revealing the matching inside sleeve.

The concept was extended by splitting the two sides of the “planet” and placing them on inverted black and white backgrounds.
